100% Juice

The American Dental Association (ADA) has done resent research funded by the National Institutes of Health to determine whether consuming 100% juice increases the risk for things such as cavities, infection and bacteria that cause damage to teeth.

The ADA found that in a study of 2300 preschoolers, that 100% juice does not increase risk of dental caries, regardless of socioeconomic background. What is interesting is that this seems to be true, regardless of the fact that typical children today are drinking more than the maximum amount of juice per day as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics which is 4 – 6 ounces, and most American preschoolers are drinking more than double the recommended amount.

The researchers propose that there may be several explanations for the lack of a link between 100% fruit juice and tooth decay, including exposure to fluoride, possible antibacterial components of pure juice, and that parents who give their children 100% fruit juice are more likely to be more mindful of health in general.
